Dounreay Launches 23 New Apprenticeships Amid Decommissioning Efforts
Dounreay, once the epicenter of fast reactor research and development, is now channeling its decommissioning efforts into fostering career opportunities for young professionals. The site is currently accepting applications for 23 apprenticeship positions across various disciplines, including engineering trades, engineering design, construction scaffolding, construction painting, business administration, and project management. These apprenticeships span durations of two to four years, with applications closing between February 14 and 21, and successful candidates commencing their roles in August.
In addition to the apprenticeship program, Dounreay’s operator, Nuclear Restoration Services, is recruiting nine health physics surveyor trainees. This two-year training initiative culminates in an NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Radiological Protection, equipping participants with specialized skills essential for the site’s ongoing decommissioning activities.
Earlier this year, Dounreay also offered 15 positions in its graduate recruitment program, with applications having closed on January 6. These initiatives underscore Dounreay’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce poised to tackle the complexities of nuclear decommissioning.
Dave Wilson, Managing Director of Nuclear Restoration Services at Dounreay, emphasized the site’s dedication to high-quality training across diverse disciplines, noting that the decommissioning phase presents unique opportunities for cutting-edge science and engineering training.
